Purpose

Harper Alternative is a restrictive placement option for students with significant social-emotional, and behavioral disabilities. All students in attendance are students receiving special education services with no non-disabled peers. Currently, there are no general education classes offered for core content areas.

Description
Harper Alternative will provide time-limited (45 school days) intensive intervention and specially designed direct instruction to address social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students with significant skill deficits in these areas directly related to a disability. Students will have access to core content and some career and technical education (CATE) during their time at Harper Alternative.

Curriculum/Assessment
Standard district curriculum
Standard state assessment – STAAR

Staffing
1 teacher/1 teaching assistant
4-8 students

Entrance Criteria
Before placement in Harper Alternative, the ARD/IEP committee will conduct a behavior staffing that reviews all interventions and strategies that have been attempted with the student. Results of progress monitoring must indicate no or limited progress over a 4-6 week period of interventions for a student to be eligible for placement in Harper Alternative. The ARD/IEP committee must determine that the student needs intensive, time-limited intervention to address inappropriate and/or challenging behaviors and social/emotional learning deficits.

Exit Criteria
The ARD/IEP committee will outline a reintegration plan for each student to return to a comprehensive school setting. Harper Alternative will implement the reintegration in collaboration with the receiving school prior to exit. The student must demonstrate the ability to manage and regulate his/her behaviors in all school settings with minimal support. The student must successfully meet the mastery criteria of Level 4 Leadership in Review 360.
